What Is a Diverter Valve, and How Does It Work?
A diverter selects the water outlet. The correct repair depends on whether it is part of the spout or a separate valve.

A diverter changes the path of water between outlets. In a tub-and-shower arrangement, operating it redirects water from the tub spout toward the showerhead. It does not heat the water and is not necessarily the control that mixes hot and cold supplies.
Spout Diverters and Separate Controls
Some assemblies have a pull-up or pull-down control on the spout. Others use a separate handle and valve for outlet selection. The appearance of the trim does not identify a compatible cartridge. Delta’s parts-identification resource is one manufacturer example; identify your own make and model before buying parts.
When Water Still Comes From the Spout
A small residual stream can be normal for an identified design. Delta’s diverter guidance distinguishes that from excessive flow for the spouts it discusses, and recommends replacing the spout in that case. This is not a promise that every diverter is repaired or replaced the same way.
Report whether the outlet selection sticks, changes on its own, or sends substantial water to both outlets. Weak shower flow can also involve other components. Water escaping at a wall connection needs a leak assessment; it is different from water leaving the spout’s intended opening.
What a Professional Checks
The technician identifies the assembly, confirms the supply isolation needed for service, and checks the appropriate cartridge, spout or connection. A replacement must match the pipe connection and installed system; forcing a spout can damage hidden piping. After reassembly, outlet selection and leaks are tested.
Do not force a stuck selector or remove an unknown valve while it is pressurized. Clog Heroes offers fixture plumbing service. Describe the affected outlets and visible leak location so the team can discuss the scope.
