A Gristmill on Quantico Creek

It started around 1690, when Richard Gibson built a gristmill on Quantico Creek. The town was laid out on 60 acres at the head of the creek's harbor.

Trade came quickly. Dumfries had a customhouse and warehouse by 1731, and more warehouses had gone up along the Quantico Creek estuary by 1732.

The Weems-Botts Museum keeps two local stories alive. Parson Weems wrote George Washington's first biography, and lawyer Benjamin Botts defended Aaron Burr at his 1807 treason trial.
