From Greenfield Plantation to an Arnold Palmer Course

The name 'The Wilderness' is older than the battles. Colonial iron smelting cut up to 700 acres of hardwood a year for charcoal, and by the mid-1700s locals called the thickets that grew back 'The Wilderness.'

In 1795 Richard Estes bought about 200 acres and set up Greenfield Plantation on much of what is now Fawn Lake. The Greenfield cemetery still lies south of the dam.

On May 5 and 6, 1864, the Battle of the Wilderness crossed much of this ground in the fight for the Orange Plank and Brock Road intersection.

The lake came in 1973, when American Central Corporation, a subsidiary of International Paper, designed and built the dam. NTS Corporation began building the neighbourhood in the late 1980s, set up the Fawn Lake Community Association in 1990 and opened the Arnold Palmer-designed golf course in 1995.

About 1,400 Homes on Public Water and Sewer

The community association puts Fawn Lake at about 1,400 homes. The wider census tract counts 2,521, with 2,364 single-family detached and a median build year of 2003.

Fawn Lake sits outside the county's Primary Development Boundary, yet the comprehensive plan treats it as served by public water and sewer. Good to know when you call about a drain.
