158 Acres at $3 an Acre: The Snell Training School

In 1910 the Spotsylvania Sunday School Union bought a 158-acre tract at Snell, at $3 an acre, to build a school for Black students. They called it the Snell Training School.

Its first classroom opened in fall 1913 for 47 students in grades 1 through 7. The main building was finished in 1922 for $7,500.

A Virginia historical marker approved for 7565 Courthouse Road records that for decades it was the county's only public high school for Black students. The school took John J. Wright's name in 1940, was rebuilt in 1952 and became the John J. Wright Educational and Cultural Center in 2008.

See it for yourself. The John J. Wright Museum at 7565 Courthouse Road is free and opens Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
