Clog Heroes, Your Falmouth, VA Plumber at the Falls of the Rappahannock

Plumbing, drain and sewer help in Falmouth, Stafford County, is a call to Clog Heroes. Falmouth was laid out in 1727 at the falls of the Rappahannock, right across the river from Fredericksburg. For more than a hundred years it was a busy port and trading town.

Clog Heroes looks after plumbing, drains and sewer lines in Falmouth homes today. Every visit starts the same way, with a licensed, background-checked technician finding the cause. Work begins after you approve the written price.

156 Pieces of Falmouth History

The Falmouth Historic District joined the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1969 and the National Register of Historic Places a year later. Its 2012 update counts 156 contributing resources, and 134 of them are buildings.

Falmouth started out in King George County. It became part of Stafford County in 1776.

Old houses like these need a careful hand, so our technicians look at what's actually going on before they recommend anything.

Heading into Fredericksburg? The Falmouth Bridge you cross is at least the twelfth to span the Rappahannock at that spot.

A Customs House on Cambridge Street

Walk the old streets and the port town is still there. On Cambridge Street stands a tiny Federal-period customs house, one of the smallest in the nation. Close by are Basil Gordon's brick warehouse and a large commercial building from the early 1800s.

The historic district covers 225 acres where U.S. 1 meets U.S. 17. Walk it and you pass the Counting House, the Tavern, the Tavern Keeper's House, the old Post Office, the Double House and the Master Hobby School.

Look up from the river and you'll see three 18th-century houses on the heights above town: Carlton, Clearview and Belmont.

Carlton sits at the edge of a steep bluff directly above town. Local merchant John Short had it built about 1785, with a five-bay Georgian front and a hipped roof. Three of the original outbuildings still stand beside it: a kitchen and laundry, a dairy and a smokehouse.

Clearview stands on its own hilltop, looking over Falmouth and Fredericksburg both. Andrew Buchanan bought the land in 1786, and the house most likely went up soon after: a hipped roof, a symmetrical five-bay front and most of its early woodwork still inside.

Down on King Street, at number 305, is the Conway House. It went up in 1807 for James Vass, a merchant and mill owner, and the author and abolitionist Moncure Daniel Conway later lived there. Two stories of brick, five bays across, a slate roof and a full basement.

Houses like these were built to stand for centuries, and they have. When a pipe in one of them needs work, the right move is to look first and cut second. That's how our technicians work in every house, old or new.

The Road to Winchester Started Here

Falmouth was a crossroads long before I-95. The old Falmouth Road ran from the port all the way to Winchester in the Shenandoah Valley, and U.S. Route 17 follows much of that route today.

In the 1800s the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad stopped here. Nearby stood Hunter's Ironworks, also called the Rappahannock Forge, an iron furnace.

River Parks and Forbes Street

Falmouth sits right on the river, and its parks show it. River Road Park has sandy beaches along the Rappahannock. St. Clair Brooks Park and John Lee Pratt Memorial Park are on the same stretch of water.

A paved path ties them together. The Belmont Ferry Farm Trail runs 2.5 miles, with access at the Historic Port of Falmouth, John Lee Pratt Memorial Park and St. Clair Brooks Memorial Park.

The Historic Port of Falmouth park, at 401 River Road, has picnic areas right on the Rappahannock, and you can fish there with a Virginia fishing license.

And if you've done the school run to Falmouth Elementary at 1000 Forbes Street, you know the 22405 ZIP code well.

An Artist's Estate at 224 Washington Street

Belmont is one of those houses on the heights. The artist Gari Melchers and his wife, Corinne, settled there in 1916. On December 21, 1965, the estate was named a National Historic Landmark.

Today it's Gari Melchers Home and Studio, a 27-acre estate run by the University of Mary Washington. You can tour the house, the studio and the galleries, then walk the gardens and several miles of trails.

Inside, look for Melchers' portrait of Mark Twain.

It's also the official Stafford County Visitor Center, which makes it a good first stop when family is in town for the weekend.

4,956 Neighbors on 3.2 Square Miles

Falmouth had 4,956 residents at the 2020 census, on 3.2 square miles along the north bank of the river.

When you call, a technician arrives, finds the cause and writes down the price. You decide. Say yes on site and the $89 dispatch fee is waived. Nothing starts until you've approved the number.
