Can You Install a Water Heater Without a Drain Pan?

Do not assume a water heater can be installed without a drain pan. Check the exact heater instructions, installation location and requirements that apply to the job before proceeding. A heater functioning normally does not establish that its installation is compliant or protected against leaks.

What a Pan Does

A drain pan beneath the heater collects drips or leakage and, when properly piped, directs that water toward an appropriate drain. Check the Installation, Not a Blanket Rule

Ask the installer to explain the applicable pan requirement, drain destination and access for inspection. The local building authority can resolve how requirements apply to a specific installation.

Keep Safety Discharges Separate
